Duncan Hines Gluten Free

I was so excited that Duncan Hines jumped on board the Gluten free train, I was even more excited when I found the brownie mix in my local store albeit they were $5 a box.   Since I make a treat every week for my ladies group, I thought I would give DH a try.

There is quite a bit to say about Duncan Hines, first off their website is really hard to navigate through.  I hope they fix this to make it more user-friendly.   When hunting for their gluten free offerings I found myself totally lost, even when searching for gluten free in the search bar.

I bought the brownie mix as this is all my store had at the moment.  I bought two boxes for $10.    Kind of expensive but no more expensive than normal gluten free mixes which is just stupid to begin with.   But it was an expensive trial of a new product.   I bought two as reading the box, it only made a 9×9 pan full.

First thing I have to say is………..

It did not make a 9×9 pan full, I used an 8 inch round and it didn’t quite fill it up.  I was hopeful it would rise but it really didn’t and I was left after sinking a 1/2 – 8 inch pan of brownies.   I am glad I bought two boxes or there wouldn’t have been enough food.

the brownies are best left in the pan you baked them in and I suggest serving in a bowl.  These are not the kind of brownies you can cut into squares and pick up to eat.   they fall apart at the slightest movement which  made it very very difficult for me to decorate.  I accustomed to being able to handle my brownies.

since it came with a glaze (more on that later) my intention was to place these on a pan and pour the glaze on them, then decorate.   That did not happen, I got it out of the pan just fine except they just basically fell apart to crumbs.  That was okay I could still work with it (you will see I was okay with one just crumbling) so I was extra careful with the other and got it out mostly but its all stuck together with frosting in the end photo.

The glaze I was hoping would cover the brownie and hide all the imperfections.   I followed the directions to a T and came out with a glaze that was runny and immediately went to pour it on my brownie and just plop, an immediate setup of the glaze occurred. (keep in mind I did this while the brownies were room temp, not cold)  This is not a glaze you can pour over and make it all look uniformed.   when you tried to delicately spread it, your brownie crumbled again.   So I ended up making my own glaze to go over the mess I had just made with the glaze that came with the mix.

The all over process of this even looking good was over, I did end up with food that was cute and edible but my over all impression of this was a big fat zero!

The taste?  It was a normal mix brownie.  Not chewy, just kind of like a crumbly brownie/cake like taste.   Not at all what I am use to or want to make again.

I think I will wait awhile on testing the other products until they have the GF thing down a little better.

Sorry, but this just did not hold up to my standards.

I was really hopeful too.
