I will never give up my Traditions!

There are some traditions in life that you just can’t give up!

We have many traditions in our family, some I have brought into our marriage from my childhood and some my husband has brought in and the many we have made together. My hope is one day my kids take into their marriage some of the same traditions.

There are also traditions that are personal and special.

A tradition is a behavior passed down from generation to generation. Common examples include holidays or foods on special days. Traditions can persist and evolve for thousands of years—the word “tradition” itself derives from the Latin tradere or traderer literally meaning to transmit, to hand over, to give for safekeeping.

The one tradition I will never give up is coke and peanuts, mainly because it comes from my momma who is no longer with me on earth. From as far back as I can remember I have fond memories of sitting on the front porch on hot summer days enjoying an ice cold Coca-Cola with Spanish peanuts. The sweet cola with salty peanuts and the crunch and bubbles up my nose just send me back to being a little girl sitting next to my momma.

Today as I was enjoying my coke and peanuts I thought to myself why is this so important to me? Yes it makes me feel close to momma; in some way I feel it honors her. Is it because I love the taste, well I do enjoy it with every sip I take. Is it a habit, I don’t think that is the case as it might be with some traditions because I only do it when I have something heavy on my mind, am missing my momma or just need some comfort.

Nailed it, it is definitely comfort. It satisfies a lot of my needs but comfort is the one it satisfies most. Sort of like my tea and buttered toast when I am sick, or warm 7-up when my tummy hurts, or graham crackers and frosting. They all bring comfort to me as they are what my momma gave me when I wasn’t feeling so well and needed comfort.

Whatever the reason you have for following a tradition, its special and you should never forget them. Traditions remind us of where we have come from, or what we want remembered in our future generation.

What tradition have you forgotten about?

What tradition do you want passed down?
